Who is the IIHS?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a US-based non-profit organization founded in 1959 that specializes in highway safety research. Every year the IIHS tests the latest vehicles for their ‘crashworthiness’ and nominates top performing models as being either a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick +. Each designation is widely considered to be a safety benchmark in the auto industry.
Toyota’s Top Performers at the 2019 IIHS Awards
Once again, Toyota was well represented at this year’s IIHS awards, with the following vehicles recognized for their above-average levels of safety and protection.
2019 Toyota Corolla – Top Safety Pick
For the 3rd year in a row the Toyota Corolla has been recognized for its high safety standards in the ‘Small Car’ segment. This impressive vehicle received tops marks for Front Crash Prevention as well as for its Child Seat Anchors, while everything from its Roof Strength to its Head Restraints passed with flying colours.
2019 Toyota Camry – Top Safety Pick +
The Toyota Camry continued its remarkable run in the ‘Mid-size Car’ category this year, where it was named a Top Safety Pick + for the 6th year in a row by the IIHS. The new Camry was awarded the highest levels of safety recognition across the board, including for its Headlights, Child Seat Anchors, and Front Crash Prevention systems.
2019 Toyota Avalon – Top Safety Pick +
The Avalon continues to prove that it is far more than just a spacious and comfortable vehicle by being named a Top Safety Pick + in the ‘Large Cars’ segment this year. In the ‘Mid-size SUVs’ category it was the Toyota Highlander dominating the limelight yet again, making it an incredible 12 years running that the Highlander has been recognized at the IIHS awards.
