There is no better way to judge the safety of a vehicle than by asking the experts and there is no more respected expert than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Every year the IIHS releases a list of Top Safety Picks which are widely considered to be a benchmark in the auto industry and here we will look at the Toyota vehicles highlighted by the IIHS for 2017.

Mini cars

Toyota Yaris iA – This wildly popular Toyota was named a Top Safety Pick for 2017, with its many safety highlights including an ‘Advanced’ rating for Front Crash Prevention. Furthermore, the Yaris also received ‘Good’ ratings for all five elements of ‘Crashworthiness’ tested.

Small cars

Toyota Corolla – The Corolla performed strongly on every element of IIHS safety testing this year and as a result was named a Top Safety Pick Plus. Not only did the Corolla receive ‘Good’ ratings for all levels of ‘Crashworthiness’ tested, its Front Crash Prevention was rated as ‘Superior’.

Toyota Prius – This eco-friendly ride proved that it is also extremely safe in being named a Top Safety Pick Plus for 2017. Rated ‘Good’ for all levels of ‘Crashworthiness’ and ‘Superior’ for Front Crash Prevention, the Prius was also highlighted for the ease of use of its Child Seat Anchors.

Toyota Prius Prime – The Prime was one of three Prius vehicles to be named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the IIHS this year. It received a ‘Superior’ rating for Front Crash Prevention and a rating of ‘Good’ for all levels of ‘Crashworthiness’.

Mid-size cars

Toyota Camry – Toyota’s flagship mid-size car continues to pile up the awards and was named a Top Safety Pick Plus once again for 2017. With optional equipment, the Camry received an ‘Advanced’ rating for Front Crash Prevention and ‘Good’ ratings for all five elements of ‘Crashworthiness’.

Toyota Prius v – The Prius v was also named a Top Safety Pick Plus at this year’s IIHS awards, with everything from its Headlights to all levels of ‘Crashworthiness’ rated as ‘Good’. Its Front Crash Prevention system was rated as ‘Advanced’.

Large cars

Toyota Avalon – This family favourite was yet another Toyota to be named a Top Safety Pick Plus this year, thanks in large part to its ‘Superior’ rating for Front Crash Prevention. It also received ‘Good’ ratings for all five elements of ‘Crashworthiness’ as well as the second highest rating (‘Acceptable’) for headlights.

Small SUVs

Toyota RAV4 – This wildly popular adventure vehicle proved that it is also extremely safe in being named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the IIHS this year. The RAV4 received top ratings for ‘Crashworthiness’, Front Crash Prevention, as well as for the ease of use of its Child Seat Anchors.

Mid-size SUVs

Toyota Highlander – Mid-size SUVs don’t get much safer than the Highlander, which was named a Top Safety Pick Plus yet again this year. Not only was it rated ‘Good’ for all levels of ‘Crashworthiness’, its Front Crash Prevention was rated as ‘Superior’.
