Just when you thought Toyota vehicles couldn’t get any safer, this amazing automaker has made one of its most impressive safety systems even better. Here we will look at all you need to know about the highly anticipated Second Generation Toyota Safety Sense system.

What is Toyota Safety Sense?

Toyota Safety Sense is a fully-integrated vehicle safety system that improves performance, reliability, and overall vehicle functioning at a broad range of speeds and under a wide array of conditions. This award-winning safety package is designed to protect drivers, their passengers, and everyone else sharing the road with them and has the following three main focuses;

  • Preventing/mitigating frontal collisions

  • Keeping drivers and their vehicles in their lane

  • Increasing road safety at night

What’s new for 2018?

Prior to 2018, Toyota Safety Sense was available in two main packages – Toyota Safety Sense C and Toyota Safety Sense P – with the main difference between the two being the inclusion of Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in the latter. For 2018, Toyota has taken the best features of each of these great packages and made them even better.

Below is a brief summary of the new and improved Toyota Safety Sense system;

Pre-Collision System (Updated)

This savvy system now makes it even easier to detect and avoid pedestrians during both daytime and nighttime driving conditions. It also boasts updated functionality specifically designed for detecting cyclists.

Lane Departure Alert (Updated)

Your Toyota will now not only detect and alert you if your vehicle starts to drift from its lane, it can tell exactly how close you are to the edge of the road’s surface.

Lane Tracing Assist (New)

Designed to work in conjunction with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, the brand new Lane Tracing Assist provides state-of-the-art steering support that will keep your vehicle in the centre of its lane at all times.

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (Updated)

Toyota’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now boasts Full-Speed Range functionality, which includes enhanced acceleration/deceleration capabilities as well as improved forward recognition.

Road Sign Assist (New)

Using a strategically positioned on-board camera, this great new feature is designed to detect and recognise information from common road signs. Better yet, it communicates this crucial data to drivers via the instrument cluster and/or Heads-Up Display.
